Fried guinea

This makes a tasty meal for 2 and is great all year round. You can pick up a guinea pig from any local pet store - please note most will not sell it to you if you plan to eat it, so best to not tell them :)

Ingredients

  • 1 guinea pig, de-haired, gutted, and cleaned
  • 1/2 c. flour
  • 1/4 - 1/2 t. ground cumin
  • salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 c. oil
  • Cooking Instructions

Pat dry the skin of the guinea pig and rub in the cumin, salt, and pepper. Preheat oil. Dust the carcass with the flour and place it on its back in the oil, turning to cook both sides. Alternately, the guinea pig can be cut and fried in quarters.

Serve with boiled potato or boiled manioc root, and a salad of cut tomatoes and slivered onions bathed in lime juice and a bit of salt. Have cold beer on hand.

I bought 2 guinea pigs to try this recipe, but I need some help please. I’m not sure the best way to kill them?

I hit one on the head with a frying pan, and its bleeding quite a bit, but its not dead yet. Any idea on the best way to do it?

This is a delicious meal - killing it off first can be a bit messy, but dont let it dishearten you - most grow to enjoy the killing part most of all! I especially like skinning the Guinea Pig personally..

By the way, one big clout to the head with a rolling pin will usually do it.. I let my 7 year old son do it now, building up his strength.

    kirsten July 2, 2010 at 11:30 am

bludgeoning the guinea pigs with a rolling pin was creeping me out, and seemed a bit inhumane to me. And it also did not kill it. So, alternatively, I sedated the guinea pig with a little Grand Marnier (it was all I had in the liquor cabinet) and then when the little guy was all nice and groggy, I shaved off all his fur with a Lady Bic razor (rather than actually skinning him.) He actually seemed to enjoy this, although he slept through most of it til the end when he was pretty awake again — awake but drunk. Then i just carefully lowered him into the hot oil cradled in a big slotted spoon. Make sure you put the lid on the pot immediately as they can really thrash about and can splatter boiling hot oil everywhere. The skin was real crispy. This is a neat recipe. It tasted just like chicken!

your jacked up July 2, 2010 at 2:26 pm

just goes to show you how many people that are retarted and cruel why dont we get u drunk shave you and lower you in hot oil so your skin can be crispy and see how you friggen like it………FREAKS SEEK MENTAL HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    kirsten July 3, 2010 at 9:58 am

    i’m ‘retarted’?
just because i shaved my guinea pig? jeez, no one complained when i shaved my beaver….

    mouzza August 25, 2010 at 1:27 am

does this recipe work just as well on the bbq ?

    charity December 5, 2010 at 4:28 am

ok i would not personally eat gineau pig but some ppl do. ppl eat cows and chickens and ducks, which are also known to be pets, so do not say that we in america do not eat pets because we do!!!!

    charity December 5, 2010 at 4:30 am

so its okay to slaughter pigs chickens cows and whatever else, but not a gineau pig?

    Nana February 12, 2011 at 5:40 am

I find it a bit ironic that there’s so much offended commenters here that could most likely eat a hamburger or a steak without a guilty consience…
Guinea pig is meat and it can be eaten, just like any other animal. I personally wouldn’t try out this recipe myself, but if I went to China and someone served me this dish, of course I would try it out.

    Mark February 25, 2011 at 5:23 am

OK, AWesterners, (Americans?), get over it, there are other cultures in the world, stop being so self centred

    rje March 20, 2011 at 5:02 pm

the only reason why all these people are reacting negatively is because of the cutesy guinea pig creature. eating guinea pigs would just be the same as eating meat from cows, pigs, chickens, ducks, rabbits, and other animals. if you want cruelty-free meals, try being a vegetarian. don’t insult other cultures just because they eat what you don’t eat. do people who eat guinea pigs make them less of a human being than you are?

only me June 23, 2011 at 5:02 pm

Hahahaha Im thinking maybe there wouldn’t be such negative feed back on this if the picture of the dish wasn’t of a LIVE GUINNIE PIG however i dont think i could eat a rodent but some cultures do… i guess they have more balls then me! Just saying maybe people shouldn’t talk down on what other cultures use as a source of food… who knows they could think eating cow is gross… but hell i’ve seen people eat snakes and frogs… so i guess we shouldn’t knock it untill we’ve tried it…

    Hope August 8, 2011 at 4:46 pm

Freakin’ Hilarious. To all of you getting your panties in an uproar - get a clue and a sense of humor people - nobody is bludgeoning guinea pigs and frying them. I’m sure this recipe was all in good fun and it was one of the highlights of my day.

Anybody here eat Wabbit?, sorry, Rabbit?

    Disgusted August 12, 2011 at 3:00 am

Look, all I am saying is that there are some things really wrong here.
How can you handle the fact that they have such cute little faces, animated personalities, and are basically wonderful and adorable, and personally I hate the fact that their cute little leg bones get caught in your teeth! I just don’t have enough toothpicks to deal with this recipe.

i live in Scotland and we eat guinea pig quite a bit.. they are a good source of nutrition and really do taste great with very little effort. My granny has made me and my wee brother Guinea pig since we were wee boys.. i know a lot of people get squeemish about the killing part, i think its because they are fluffy and they make eye contact with you.. the way my gran has always done it is to pop them in a big shoe and fold over both sides of the shoe so that it cant get out or see what is about to happen.. then u just whack the shoe against the kitchen worktop a few times! thats the tricky part done, and no mess or expence.

Tarra kellie September 30, 2011 at 1:32 pm

I have pet chickens, but I still like KFC

judy neuling January 10, 2012 at 8:39 pm

who ever thought of this is a very sick person.

    Sgriff January 11, 2012 at 6:33 am

I’ve found that dropping them in a big pot of boiling water kills and takes the hair off at the same time.

    Tom January 12, 2012 at 12:41 pm

If the larder shelves were bare, all the Guineas would soon have no hair. They’d be in the pot instead of being fed and petted alot.

Many of you folks must think that beef, chicken and pork originate in the back room of the store.
Instead of the slaughter houses that you seem to abhor and ignore.

Come on, get a life. The pigs don’t feel the strife.
